The Power of Culture
A new museum is created almost every day, everywhere in the world. The Unesco underlines that cultural and creative industries are some of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world. The "cultural sector" represents an estimated value of more than US$ 1.3 trillion which is 7% of global GDP. Cultural infrastructure including museums generate millions of jobs -6.7 million in the EU-. A museum such as the Louvre in Paris attracts nearly 10 million visitors a year. Its direct revenues were €199 million in 2013. But in fact, revenues generated by this museum for the french economy as a whole represent between €700 million and €1 billion per year (hotels, shopping etc..). The Tate museum in London is estimated to bring in revenues over £100 million every year. And UK's GDP owes over £ 20 billion to cultural and heritage tourism. Cultural tourism is also important for India. Tourism in this country grew steadily and is responsible for more than 40 million jobs. But even more important than just numbers on a trade balance sheet, this is what the British Council recalled: "given the unprecedented levels of International cooperation required to address challenges such as climate change, global poverty or terrorism, culture is a crucial tool in bringing people and nations together". This statement enhances understanding the effects on the international opinion of the destruction of cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria. This is a major threat to our Common Cultural Heritage. In light of this, Culture is undoubtedly a key resource to address the social and economic challenges faced by the International Community.
