Tackling Climate Change will depend on the Efforts of each and every one of us
The fight against climate change will obviously require global solidarity. But behind the fine words, we need to raise individual awareness. It is easy to blame the international institutions, the national governments or the major industrial players for their lack of responsiveness and weaknesses. But we must also be aware of our responsibilities as citizens as well as consumers. Undoubtedly the fight against climate change will require sacrifices in our living habits. Just ask yourself: how could I contribute to this combat? Here is a small and unpretentious questionnaire: 1. Are we prepared to change our eating habits? And especially eat less meat. And significantly reduce our food waste. Worldwide, livestock accounts for 14.5% of human induced greenhouse gas emissions (Re. FAO-UN). 2. Are we prepared to travel less, and especially to fly less frequently. Because tourism is already responsible for nearly one tenth of the world’s carbon emissions (Re.Journal Nature ). 3. Are we prepared to use our cars less? Because walking or biking could substitute for 41% of short car trips. According to the National Household Travel Survey (US) more than 20% of all car trips were a mile or less. The only certainty we have at the time of writing is that this battle against climate change is far from won.
