Are we heading towards an erasure of the European Union ?
Most of the leaders of the European Union (EU) know perfectly well that the election of D. Trump as President of the USA represent a real challenge for the very cohesion of the EU. That said, it is also necessary to emphasize that other leaders such as Victor Orban for Hungary or Georgia Meloni for Italy are supporters of D. Trump. The substantial increase in custom duties imposed in particular on European products is one of the first measures announced by the new American President. And to fully understand the importance of the new direction of the American administration, it is simply necessary to recall that the EU's main trading partners are the USA and China. Let us also emphasize that the European countries that depend the most on the United States for their exports are Germany, Italy and Ireland, but also France and the Netherlands. As an example, it is interesting to point out that in 2024 the United States became Germany's leading trading partner with 255 billion euros of goods exchanged (Re.allnews.ch). It is, undeniable that Pt Trump has made China his main adversary both military and commercially. But at the same time he also intends to subject European industry to the sole benefit of America. He will therefore weaken a large part of the European economy. And already European leaders are showing signs of disunity in the face of the new American policy. Consequently the economic weakness of the EU will be added to its military weakness. A dark future seems to be emerging for Europeans.
